British Tomato Fortnight
Did you know that the British people eat about 500,000 tons of fresh tomatoes every year. That’s 60z or 160g per person or more than 100 per year, and we’re 30% more likely to add tomatoes to our lunches now than a year ago. However, only a fifth of the tomatoes the British eat are from the U.K. – 4 out of 5 tomatoes that are eaten the U.K. are imported.
British Tomato Fortnight (BTF), along with the British Tomato Growers Association, which represents 90% of commercial producers in the U.K., is hoping to change that. The fortnight runs from 29th May to the 11th of June and champions the British tomato whilst educating consumers about the benefits of eating locally grown produce. Sustainability is the big focus during BTF.
During this fortnight many restaurants, cafés and farmers’ markets offer special menus and promotions featuring delectable tomato-based dishes.
