Why can’t I install gas appliances myself?
Having your gas appliances installed, serviced, and maintained by a qualified Commercial Gas Safe Engineer will prevent fire, explosion, and the production of dangerous carbon monoxide gas. The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER) applies to all equipment used in the workplace, including catering equipment.
BY LAW:
- You must have a suitable maintenance scheme in place for your gas appliances and only use a competent Gas Safe registered engineer to install, service & maintain gas appliances.
- You must ensure that the manufacturer’s instructions are followed. The warranty will be voided if you attempt to install a gas appliance yourself.
- You must train your employees to use the equipment safely.
- You must have your gas appliances inspected annually by a competent Gas Safe registered engineer.
- You must keep the gas safety record left by the engineer.
You can search for a suitable commercial engineer in your area on www.gassaferegister.co.uk. The Gas Safe Register is the only official gas registration body of gas businesses and engineers in the United Kingdom, Isle of Man, Jersey & Guernsey. By law, all gas businesses must be on the Gas Safe Register. Finally, check that the engineer is competent for Commercial/Catering and for the type of gas in your premises (Natural Gas or LPG).
